How much advertising is in Selvedge?
Viewed as a service, our advertising is carefully selected to complement
the Selvedge philosophy. It is considered a source of communication and
information, and is both woven into the body of the magazine and highlighted
in comprehensive directories. We aim to ensure that individuals read and
consider Selvedge advertisements an integral part of the publication. Artists,
museums, and shops as well as academic conferences and special events are
among those that we list in our pages. Overall Selvedge contains significantly
less advertising than the magazine industry standard of 30 percent.
I'm a knitter/embroiderer/quilter/dyer. Is it
relevant to me?
Yes, the Selvedge readership is composed of all those who claim a passion
for textiles and love of beautiful things, and reflects the thoughtful and
creative tastes of this group without isolating or restricting readers.
The magazine provides a wide-ranging, unbiased and critical overview of
the textile world, and serves as a link to many other areas of interest,
inspiration, and knowledge.
Does Selvedge publish patterns?
No, Selvedge focuses on the ‘why’ rather than the ‘how’.
There are other project-based publications on the market, and some of our
favourite makers have published books about their techniques. We never say
never, but for the moment Selvedge will continue to offer inspiration through
diverse articles and beautiful images.
Why is the magazine so expensive?
The magazine is expensive but it is not overpriced.
Selvedge is a small and independent company. We try to produce a visually
beautiful publication that communicates news and ideas using the best-suited
tools— whether that be vivid colour, high-quality paper, or commissioning
the best writers, photographers and illustrators.
Selvedge is not a disposable magazine, the majority of our readers keep
each issue as they would a book. Nevertheless we strive to find ways to
cut costs without compromising standards. As the magazine grows we hope
to become more competitive, and in the meantime we appreciate your support
for our editorial vision.
Is it possible to receive a copy of an issue
in which I am featured?
Our policy is to send out copies of the page of the magazine in which you
are featured. These are referred to as sendbacks. You will also receive
a contributor's rate card, which entitles you to discounts on subscriptions
and other marketing materials, including a stand in which you can display
your Selvedge page.
What is the submission deadline for news and listings?
Please use our advertising deadlines as a guide. You can view them by clicking
on the 'Advertise' tab on our homepage.
Do you accept unsolicited news items or articles?
We are always interested to hear from you but cannot guarantee inclusion
in an issue. If a story or a profile of a designer's work captures our imagination
after an initial press release has been sent to us, we will then ask for
high resolution images and more details. You will usually see copy before
the magazine is printed, but the editor's decision is final and we withhold
the right to withdraw a story or change it at short notice. For information
on how to present article ideas please click the ‘author’ link
on the homepage.
Is there a charge for exhibition listings?
Yes, there is a charge. As Selvedge is now read by more people than any
other UK based applied arts publication and due to the increasing number
of listings we receive, we now charge £40 for a listing including
a title, subtitle, venue, address, telephone number, website, dates and
opening times. We have 40 spaces dedicated to these. Alternatively you may
book a box containing an image and 50 words of text. We have space for 4
of these. Spaces will be allocated on a strictly first come first served
basis. Advertisers who book space at size 9 or above will be entitled to
a free listing in the same issue.
Where is my Object/Bookshop Catalogue?
Catalogues are not the most environmentally friendly things, so we aim to
produce just one a year. All the products from the Object Catalogue are
produced by small, independent artisans so the manufacture of our chosen
items has taken some time. Secondly, with new products added with every
issue we decided to delay publication until we had a wider range of items.
The bookshop is a similar case, we are planning to have both catalogues
printed and sent out by mid April.
Why does postage cost so much?
In the past we have experienced problems with missing and undelivered parcels.
As a result we now send all UK orders by Royal Mail Special Delivery. This
guarantees the delivery of the parcel and means that your order is insured
against damage or loss by the post office.
We have the same system for overseas orders, although a cheaper option for
untracked mail is available, if you choose this service we are not responsible
for damage or loss.
Can I return Objects and Books?
Yes, Selvedge’s returns policy requires goods to be sent back within
28 days of the date of delivery. Items must be returned in the same, saleable
condition as received. The return form must be completed and this can be
found attached to the delivery note with the parcel. Details of why the
item was not suitable must be filled out and sent back with the item. Returns
must be sent back by recorded delivery for which you must cover the cost.
What shall I do if I haven’t received my order?
All Objects are produced by small artisans and independent designers so
we ask that you allow up to 28 days for delivery. Some items are made to
order, this is stated on the website - extra delivery time may be necessary.
The same delivery time applies to the bookshop, many of our books are difficult
to source. We try to keep them all in stock but we do not have the book(s)
you have ordered there may be a slight delay.
If you have concerns about your order please contact the Clare Bungey on
